“Humility Will Take You Far”- Gifty Dumelo and Other Powerful Women Inspire Students at ‘The Next Hera’ Summit

On July 2, 2025, the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall of the University of Ghana came alive with inspiration, insight, and empowerment as leading Ghanaian women gathered for The Next Hera Summit. The event, designed to mentor and uplift young women, featured accomplished speakers from law, beauty, governance, and business.

One of the standout moments came from Gifty Mawunya Dumelo, Esq., wife of Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo. Addressing the packed auditorium, she emphasized that humility and respect are not just moral values—but essential keys to success in today’s job market.

“Humility will take you very far,” she said. “Imagine two graduates from UG with the same qualifications. One is arrogant and entitled; the other is respectful and humble. Who do you think an employer will choose? Your attitude speaks louder than your CV.”

She went on to encourage students not to compare their journeys with others.

“Everyone’s path is different. Some people bloom early, others later. What matters is that you stay true to your process.”

The event also featured Lucille King, reigning queen of Miss Malaika Ghana 2024, who shared her journey of personal development and self-awareness.

“People see the glam of modeling and pageantry and assume I’m naturally confident. But it took deep self-reflection, journaling, and inner work to get here. Journaling helped me stay grounded, especially during the competition. Take time to sit with yourself—there’s always room to grow.”

Victoria Naema Abdullai, Women’s Organiser for Ayawaso West Wuogon and founder of The One Project, spoke passionately about the value of building human capital.

“The relationships you build today can open doors tomorrow. I got many of my opportunities because I treated people with honesty and respect. That’s your real currency.”

The summit, spearheaded by the Office of the General Secretary of Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall, created a safe space for students to learn, ask questions, and be empowered by the experiences of trailblazing women.

Other speakers included:

  • Professor Dokas Osei-Safo
  • Rita Safowaa Nyako
  • Gifty Mawenya Dumelo, Esq.
  • Lucille King, Miss Malaika 2024
  • Victoria Naema Abdullai

The Next Hera Summit reminded attendees that success is not only about grades or talent—but also about character, growth, and community.
