CAF Unveils New Trophy for 2024 Women’s AFCON: A New Era for African Women’s Football

CAF Unveils New Trophy for 2024 Women’s AFCON: A New Era for African Women’s Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled a brand-new trophy for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking a bold new chapter in the rise of women’s football on the continent.

The striking trophy was revealed on Wednesday night in Casablanca, Morocco—just days before the much-anticipated tournament kicks off. More than just silver and gold, the new WAFCON trophy symbolizes unity, growth, and the unstoppable momentum of women’s football in Africa.

The design pays homage to the iconic men’s AFCON trophy, signaling a shared dream of equality and recognition for the women’s game. With a blend of silver and gold, the cup features delicately shaped petals—each one representing the 12 nations competing this year. These petals form a blooming flower, a powerful symbol of progress and possibility.

At its core sits a gleaming golden football adorned with a map of Africa, reflecting the pride, hope, and ambition of an entire continent. The trophy stands on a polished white marble base, engraved with the competition’s name and encircled by the CAF emblem in gold—a statement of commitment to growing the women’s game across all 54 African nations.

This year’s Women’s AFCON is historic in more ways than one. Under CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s leadership, the tournament has seen a massive boost in prize money—now at $2.4 million, more than double the previous amount. It’s a clear sign that African women’s football is on the rise and deserves its place on the global stage.

The 2024 WAFCON runs from July 5 to 26 across various cities in Morocco. The opening match features the host nation facing off against Zambia in Rabat, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying tournament.

Defending champions South Africa, perennial giants Nigeria, and strong sides like Ghana and Cameroon are all gearing up for the ultimate battle for African glory. Nigeria remains the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with nine titles, while South Africa and Equatorial Guinea are the only other nations to have lifted the prestigious trophy.

The unveiling of the new WAFCON trophy is more than just a design change—it’s a signal that African women’s football is ready for its moment in the spotlight. With more investment, increased visibility, and growing talent, the 2024 Women’s AFCON is shaping up to be the most exciting edition yet.

Stay tuned for match highlights, player spotlights, and everything you need to know about the biggest women’s football tournament in Africa!
