UG: SRC Clears the Air- Telecel SIM Card Initiative Isn’t Free, Students to Pay GHS 10.22 Monthly

UG: SRC Clears the Air- Telecel SIM Card Initiative Isn’t Free, Students to Pay GHS 10.22 Monthly

The University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has issued an important clarification about the ongoing Telecel SIM card distribution, setting the record straight for students who believed the package was completely free.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the SRC emphasized that the SIM card initiative was never meant to be free for all students. Instead, it comes at a cost of GHS 10.22 per month, as originally communicated in a notice dated January 25, 2025.

“This initiative, introduced by the SRC in 2023 and approved in 2024, requires students to pay a monthly fee. Level 100 students were billed in the first semester and are receiving their SIM cards now. Continuing students will be billed in the second semester, with distribution set for the beginning of that semester,” the statement said.

According to the latest update:

  • Level 100 students who received their SIM cards in the first semester are being billed GHS 122.64 for the full academic year.
  • Continuing students and Level 100 students who collect their SIM cards in the second semester will be billed GHS 61.32, covering only that semester.

Over the past few weeks, many students have expressed confusion and frustration, assuming the SRC-led initiative was a fully-funded or sponsored project. The SRC clarified that the rollout was initiated by the 65th SRC administration, approved by the 66th SRC, and is now being implemented by the current 67th SRC leadership.

To ensure transparency and gather student input, the SRC has launched a dedicated online portal where students can share their feedback or concerns about the billing and distribution process. For specific billing-related issues, students are advised to visit the Students’ Accounts Office directly.

In closing, the SRC assured the student body of its continued commitment to transparency, accountability, and student welfare. All feedback received will be relayed to university management and other relevant stakeholders for prompt action.
