University of Ghana to Drive Growth Through Research and Innovation – Pro VC

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Awandare, has set a clear tone for the University’s future: research and innovation will drive the institution over the next four years.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 7th International Research Conference of the College of Humanities (August 15–18), Prof. Awandare explained that the University’s leadership is committed to turning groundbreaking ideas into practical solutions for Ghana and the continent.

The four-day conference brought together academics, students, policymakers, and international guests to brainstorm on bold strategies for tackling pressing issues in public policy and development.

Reflecting on the University’s journey, Prof. Awandare recalled the bold decision in 2014 to adopt a collegiate system of governance. According to him, this model—placing responsibility in the hands of capable leaders of various colleges—has paid off in building a stronger, research-driven institution.

“The collegiate system has proven to be sustainable and innovative, allowing our colleges to drive excellence in teaching, learning, and administration,” he noted.

Prof. Awandare stressed that research must go beyond theory to produce actionable policies and innovations. He highlighted areas such as trade and industry, agriculture, science, and technology as key sectors where the University aims to make an impact.

But beyond research, he underscored the importance of recognizing the people who keep the University moving—its staff at all levels. Commending the Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Joseph Yaro, and his team, he praised the continuation of the staff awards scheme, which celebrates dedication and hard work.

“Rewarding staff is not just about recognition; it builds camaraderie and strengthens the University’s image,” he said, urging corporate bodies to partner with the University in supporting such initiatives.

The conference ended on a hopeful note, with participants leaving with a renewed commitment to transform the conversations and ideas shared into real-world change.
