The University of Ghana community has a new General Secretary. Hillary Philipa Nyarko emerged victorious in the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) run-off election held on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
According to certified results from the Electoral Commission, Nyarko polled 14,616 votes (58.6%), beating her closest contender, Augustina Naa Adaku Ashong, who secured 10,327 votes (41.4%).
The election went into a run-off after no candidate crossed the required 50% plus one threshold in the first round. In that earlier contest, Nyarko led with 10,800 votes (45.9%), Ashong followed with 7,961 votes (33.9%), and Asempapa Setsofe Micheline came third with 4,757 votes (20.2%).
In total, 24,943 students cast their ballots in the decisive second round—an impressive turnout that reflected the high stakes and student interest in the race.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Nana Mensah Bonsu, described the process as transparent and in line with the SRC’s constitutional mandate.
With this victory, Nyarko officially takes up the role of General Secretary, a position central to the day-to-day running of the SRC. She will be responsible for record-keeping, handling correspondence, and coordinating union affairs for the upcoming academic year.
Her win not only cements her place in student leadership but also highlights the vibrancy of student democracy at the University of Ghana.
