Seventy years after walking through the gates of what was then the Demonstration School at Legon, Mr. Robin J. Dunn has returned to give back in a big way—donating $12,000 towards the construction of a modern science laboratory for the University of Ghana Basic School (UBS).
Mr. Dunn, now a seasoned professional and proud old student of UBS, donated a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo. The gesture, he said, was a token of gratitude to a school and country that laid the foundation for his life.
“I was one of the first children to be enrolled when the school opened,” he recalled with fondness. “Ghana looked after me, nurtured me, and taught me to read.” His journey later took him to Scotland for his high school education, but he never forgot where it all began.
The visit to the Vice-Chancellor was led by the Chairperson of the UBS Board, Professor Vera Fiador, and followed Mr. Dunn’s role as Guest of Honour at the School’s 63rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day, held the previous Saturday.
Professor Amfo warmly welcomed Mr. Dunn and praised the significance of his gesture. “This is more than a donation—it’s a powerful legacy. It’s a heartfelt reminder of the lasting impact our institutions have on individuals,” she said. She further encouraged other alumni to take a cue from Mr. Dunn and find ways to give back to their alma mater.
The $12,000 donation is expected to support the school’s efforts to enhance science education and improve the overall learning environment. It also aligns with the University’s broader goal of enriching student experiences and promoting sustainable resource mobilisation.
Mr. Dunn’s story is a touching reminder of how early beginnings can shape lives—and how gratitude, even decades later, can make a difference for generations to come.
