UG: SRC Women’s Commission Gives Free Sanitary Pads To Female Students

In a heartwarming initiative to support women’s health on campus, the Women’s Commission of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRC) has distributed free sanitary pads and panty liners to female students across various halls and hostels.

The two-day sanitary product distribution took place from Friday, June 27 to Saturday, June 28, 2025. The project was aimed at easing the financial burden many female students face in accessing basic menstrual hygiene products.

Speaking to Univers News, Deputy Women’s Commissioner, Ms. Perpetual Mintah, shared the motivation behind the gesture.

“Menstruation is a monthly reality, yet buying pads remains a challenge for many students. We wanted to give back and show that we care,” she said. “So, we reached out to Reflo for support, and thankfully, we were able to secure pads to distribute for free. Seeing our fellow women smile makes everything worth it.”

The sanitary pad distribution was met with excitement and gratitude from students, many of whom expressed how impactful the gesture was.

“This has never happened before on campus. I’m truly grateful, and I hope more people support them so they can keep doing this,” one student remarked.

Another added, “I didn’t expect this at all, and I really appreciate it. It means a lot.”

Women’s Commissioner, Antoinette Opoku, hinted that more women-centered initiatives are on the way, depending on the easing of restrictions on social gatherings.

“We’re just getting started. If the ban is lifted, we’ll roll out even more programs to support our sisters on campus,” she noted.

The sanitary pad initiative marks a significant step in prioritizing menstrual hygiene and the overall well-being of female students at the University of Ghana. It also highlights the growing need for accessible menstrual health support in tertiary institutions across Ghana.
