UG: SRC Women’s Commissioner Leads Vaginal Health Awareness Campaign

UG: SRC Women’s Commissioner Leads Vaginal Health Awareness Campaign

The Women Representative of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC), Ms. Antoinette Opoku, is driving the initiative to raise vaginal health awareness among female students. Through her office, she has taken proactive steps to educate students on proper feminine hygiene and the risks associated with using unapproved feminine hygiene products.

In a recent interview on Radio Universe’s Ladies Point show, Ms. Antoinette Opoku elaborated on the “Hole Invasion” initiative. The program is designed to educate female students on best practices regarding feminine hygiene and provide them with the right information to make safe and healthy choices. A key aspect of the initiative was the distribution of sanitizers to female students living in traditional hostels. According to Antoinette, these dorms were preferred because they have shared washrooms, which pose increased hygiene risks. She highlighted the very positive response from students and outlined plans to expand the initiative to Diaspora halls, traditional halls, and City Campus.

“The use of certain feminine hygiene products can have long-term effects, such as infertility. Our goal is to raise awareness and educate students, especially those attending traditional dorms, where shared washrooms pose increased hygiene risks. The first phase of this initiative has received positive feedback, and we plan to expand it to other residential facilities on campus.”

Despite the enthusiasm for the initiative, financial constraints posed a major challenge. Antoinette announced that due to lack of sponsors, the distribution of sanitizers will have to be phased. > “The biggest challenge is financial constraints, which is why we are forced to phase in the introduction of sanitizers. Despite our efforts to solicit sponsors, we have not received a response.”

Building on the success of the Hall Invasion initiative, Antoinette Opoku has launched a new program, Pad a Girl, to support female students with special needs by providing them with sanitary napkins. The effort aims to ensure that at-risk students have access to essential menstrual products. “This initiative is only for students with special needs. Our goal is to help the most vulnerable by providing sanitary napkins. We want them to feel accepted and know they are a valued part of the community.”

Through these initiatives, the UGSRC Women’s Officer not only raises awareness about vaginal health but also provides practical solutions to help female students maintain proper hygiene. Her office aims to promote a healthier campus environment through education and providing essential hygiene products to female students. As the campaign expands, Antoinette and her team continue to seek support from sponsors and stakeholders to ensure that all female students have access to proper hygiene products and information, regardless of their economic status.
